Foundation
Foundation and base is just the main color of what character you are creating by applying the skin tone first. For example, a devil would probably have a red face, a skeleton a white. A pale complexion can be achieved by powdering the face with flour. Shadows and highlights will be applied over this. Green or gray shadows over a pale complexion help to create an eerie, death effect.
Shadows
To shadow, take a dark makeup color (black, etc.) and put under areas that normally receive a shadow, for example, under your cheek bones and at the temples. Smear downwards, at the angle facing the light that will cast the shadow, (stand in a room with lights on, and stand to one side to know what I'm saying).
For an eerie shadow effect, add shadows from the nose and mouth downwards at their corners and stop when reaching another part, for example, stop before reaching the lips at the nose.
Highlights
To highlight, paint the areas around the shadow a lighter color, smearing into the edge of the shadow. For example, a thin man would have a shade of white highlight. Remember this cardinal rule: highlights exaggerate and shadows emphasize.
Powder
With a powder puff powered in flour, pat (not rub) the made-up area to prevent smearing and problems caused by sweating and lighting.
