Appendix B: Additional Rules
1. Additional Solo Games
In many locations, additional solo game types are played that are not permitted under the official rules. These are offered as options in our program.
1.1 Queen-Suit Solos
Only the eight Queens and the 10 Suit cards are trump, i.e., the Heart 10s and the Jacks return to their regular suits. The cards rank in the side suits as follows:
In this Solo type, the Queens rank higher than the other cards of the trump suit. That is, any non Queen trump card can be captured by a Queen.
1.2 Jack-Suit Solos
Only the eight Jacks and the ten Suit cards are trump, i.e., the Heart 10s and the Queens return to their regular suits. The cards rank in the side suits as follows:
In this Solo type, the Jacks rank higher than the other cards of the trump suit. That is, any non Queen trump card can be captured by a Jack.
1.3 Jack-King Solos
Only the eight Jacks and the eight Kings are trump, i.e., the Heart 10s and the Queens return to their regular suits. Diamonds are the fourth side suit. The side suit ranks are:
In this Solo type, the Jacks rank higher than the Kings. That is, any King can be captured by any Jack.
1.4 Queen-Jack Solos
Only the eight Queens and the eight Jacks are trump, i.e., the Heart 10s return to their regular suits. Diamonds are the fourth side suit. The side suit ranks are:
In this Solo type, the Queens rank higher than the Jacks. That is, any Jack can be captured by any Queen.
1.5 Jack-Queen Solos
Only the eight Jacks and the eight Queens are trump, i.e., the Heart 10s return to their regular suits. Diamonds are the fourth side suit. The side suit ranks are:
In this Solo type, the Jacks rank higher than the Queens. That is, any Queen can be captured by any Jack.
1.6 King Solo
Only the eight Kings are trump. The Heart 10s, the Queens, and Jacks return to their regular suits. Diamonds are the fourth side suit. The side suits rank:
1.7 Queens-Jacks-Kings Solos
Only the eight Queens, eight Jacks, and eight Kings are trump. The Heart 10s return to their side suit. Diamonds are the fourth side suit. The side suits rank:
The Queens rank higher than the Jacks which rank higher than the Kings. Thus, any Jack can be captured by any Queen and any King by any Jack.
1.8 Pure Trump Solo
Trumps consist of all of the cards from a particular suit named by the soloist. The ordering of the trump cards and side suits is as follows:
2. Extra Points
Some players allow extra points to be scored for two additional events:
- "Fox wins the last trick." A player who wins the last trick with the Diamond Ace ("Fox") receives an extra game point.
- "Capture Club Jack." Whomever captures the Club Jack ("Charlie") of an opponent scores an extra game point.
- "Hearts go around" means that the lead of a card from the Hearts suit, must be followed with Hearts from the other players. This is usually only figured when playing without the 9s. In this case, there are only 4 Hearts.
3. Rule Alteration
In many places, the rules are changed as they pertain to the Heart 10s. According to the official rules, when two identical cards are played to the same trick, the one played first takes precedence. This change alters this rule in the case of the Heart 10s, so that the second one wins, if both are played to the same trick.
Further, it is often typically played in solo games that the Soloist leads to the first trick no matter who dealt the cards.
By, Throw in with at least
is meant the minimum number of 9s and/or Kings that can be held by a player who calls for a new deal. In many locations, 3 points are subtracted from a players score when s/he calls for a new deal. Note the difference between the terms and and or in the sentence above. And means that both conditions must be met while or means one or the other.
In order to request a new deal, you must bid Reservation. This is because Solo games have preference and the opportunity to request a new deal takes place in the program at the point where you have a choice between a Solo game, marriage, etc..
You can announce Card Exchange when you hold at most three trumps. Each of the other players then states whether s/he wants to exchange for trump. If so, then the two exchanging players become partners. All of the trumps from the announcing player are exchanged for an equal number of side suit cards from his/her partner. In the event that the partner holds so many trumps that some of them must be returned to the announcing player, the number of trumps returned must be announced.
In order to announce Card Exchange, you must bid Reservation. This is because Solo games have preference and the opportunity to request a new deal takes place in the program at the point where you have a choice between a Solo game, marriage, etc..
There are a couple of additional options that can be turned on in the Settings Menu: Sau and Supersau. When one holds both foxes (Diamond Aces), one can announce Sau when playing one of them to a trick. This makes the two Diamond Aces the highest trumps, even higher than the Heart 10s.
This can then be continued with the announcement of Supersau. This can be announced when holding either 2 Diamond 9s, 2 Diamond Kings, or 2 Diamond 10s, but only after someone has first announced Sau.
Please note that these options have more to do with the chance distribution of the cards than they do with the skills of the card players.
Similiarly, many players play Doppelkopf without the 9s. In this version, each player holds 10 cards (since there are 40 in the entire pack). This might sound like a small adjustment, but has a substantial influence on the strategy of the game. Consider, for example, the non-Trump cards in a normal "Call Game." Only 4 Hearts and 6 Clubs and Spades available. It's easy to see that there is no way the 2nd Ace can go through in a suit without being trumped. Even the 1st Ace is highly unlikely.
If you're not yet completely comfortable with Doppelkopf, we recommend that you play the 12-card version. We think that this is a much more interesting game anyway and depends much less on the chance distribution of the cards.
All of the above options can be enabled in the program as you choose.
In addition, you can activate or deactivate the Contra/Re announcements.
