iCal Support |
TaskCard supports synching events in iCal and tasks with due dates in TaskCard. Because iCal events are also synched with iPhone and iPad you can use the feature to sync tasks with either device.
Contents
TaskCard uses a special kind of card called a Calendar Card which will sync all tasks with due dates to iCal and all events from iCal to TaskCard. Each calendar card is associated with a single calendar from iCal which it shares events from and each sheet can have only one card per calendar open at any time.
When synching events from iCal they will be added to the card or update existing tasks so the order of tasks in a card will be preserved (including containers) even if you make changes from iCal. If you delete events in iCal or tasks in TaskCard the matching item will be deleted.
Deleting calendars in iCal will close any cards in TaskCard which represent that calendar (if the card is in the open sheet). However, when deleting calendar cards in TaskCard you will be prompted to delete just the card or the card and the calendar in iCal.
Note: Currently, To-Do items from iCal are not synched with TaskCard. This is for a few reasons including: 1) TaskCard already has a powerful to-do system, 2) The number of tasks in TaskCard can easily overwhelm the system in inCal (including apps like Mail which use the To-Do items) and 3) To-do items are not synched on the iPhone or iPad making them less useful than events.
Creating a new calendar card from an existing iCal calendar.
Calendar cards can be created based off existing calendars in iCal or new calendars that will be added to iCal, both of which will be explained here.
When you edit a calendar cards title (by double-clicking on it) the name of the calendar will be changed in iCal also. If you have checked the Prefix calendar with sheet name option in the preferences (which is enabled by default) the name of the current sheet will be prefixed to the calendar name in iCal. This feature is used to distinguish TaskCard calendars from other iCal calendars.
It's also possible to change the calendar of the card at any time by clicking the calendar button in the lower left-hand corner of the card and choosing a new calendar. Please note only one calendar can be open at a time so some calendar items may not be available.
Editing a calendar task.
Tasks with due dates that belong to calendar cards are called calendar tasks, or referred to as events in iCal. TaskCard provides a window to edit the basic details of iCal events such as: start/end date, location and URL but other features like: alarms, repeating, attachments etc... must be set in iCal.
Luckily, TaskCard makes it easy to edit events in iCal by using the Edit in iCal... item in the Task menu which will open the event in edit mode within iCal.
Editing a calendar tasks details is the same as editing a normal tasks date except instead of the Date Picker a different window will open showing iCal event details.
Subscriptions & Google Calendar
iCal supports calendar subscriptions which are read-only feeds from 3rd party applications such as Google Calendar. Because TaskCard syncs with iCal you get access to Google Calendar and similar services for "free".
To create a new calendar card, (for a Google calendar subscription for example) use the File -> New Calendar Card item in the File menu and choose the name of the calendar. Whenever iCal reloads the subscription remotely the results will instantly be available in TaskCard.
Please note that calendar subscriptions are a one way, read-only feed so you can not add or edit tasks in calendar cards that represent subscriptions in iCal. These cards will show a lock icon in the corner to help you remember.
To learn more about subscriptions see the iCal manual in the iCal application.
Synching with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Because iCal events are also synched with iPhone and iPad you can use the feature to sync tasks with either device, both ways.
Synching iCal events happens automatically when you plug your iOS device(s) into your Mac so once you setup calendar cards in TaskCard their contents will be updated automatically whenever your devices are synched to your Mac!
